Abstract: | This book provides an overview of the state of knowledge of groundwater in Africa. It highlights the complexity and variety of issues surrounding the development and management of groundwater resources, and provides a snaphot of groundwater research and application in the early 21st century. The 29 papers range from strategic discussions of the role of groundwater in development and poverty reduction, to case studies on techniques used to develop groundwater, and numerical modelling of larger aquifers. Apart from two general papers (Groundwater research issues in Africa, by S.M.A. Adelana & A.M. MacDonald, and Groundwater in sub-Saharan Africa: a strategic overview of developmental issues, by S.S.D. Foster, A. Tuinhof & H. Garduņo), the papers are organized under six headings: Groundwater development and management in Africa; Groundwater and rural water supply; Urban groundwater; Groundwater chemistry and recharge; and Modelling approaches to groundwater issues. Regions and countries studied include the eastern Sahara, the Lake Chad Basin, the Niger Delta, Benin, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan and Zambia. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
