Abstract:The papers collected in this volume reflect a concern to go beyond the normative (and everyday) conceptions of libraries and 'librarianship', seeking instead to provide a multitude of platforms upon which to reconceptualise the notions of 'information', 'knowledge' and 'users' and aiming to empower the creation of multi-level partnerships whose purpose is the general good. In the first part, Setting the scene, the challenges facing library and information services are articulated, and the fluidity in policy, funding, training and co-ordination is identified. There is a historical dimension to these chapters, highlighting the legacies of colonialism and authoritarianism, and the prevalence of a transmission approach to information provision. The second part, Learners, readers, women, brings together papers which are concerned with a category of 'user', but also foregrounds the question of information format (computer-based technology and books in particular). Topics include the relevance, usefulness and appropriateness of new information technologies for women in Africa; the role of fiction, romance and reading in sustainable development; and literacy and adult basic education and training in South Africa. The third part, Applications and ideas, seeks to broaden the perspectives offered in the previous sections by introducing original research findings, evaluating projects, raising wider theoretical issues and illustrating good practices.
