Abstract: | Domestic violence is widespread in Kenya. There are numerous accounts in the Kenyan daily newspapers of violence directed at women by their spouses. There is sufficient evidence to show that cases of violence against women have become more rampant. This article examines the incidence of wife beating amoung the Abagusero community in Kisii. It analyses the causes of wife beating, reasons for its persistence, consequences for the well-being of women and for socioeconomic development. Finally, it discusses possible remedies for wife beating and how the existing legal provisions can be made more effective to minimize the violence. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 30 Abagusero married women aged between 35 and 45 who had experienced incidences of violence at the hands of their husband.
