Abstract: | The Umbilo Prisoner of War (POW) Camp, which received its first inmates while it was still under construction in 1902, formed part of an extensive camp system created in and around Durban (South Africa) during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The institutional culture of the Umbilo Camp was atypical of all the other Boer POW camps, and dissimilar, too, from POW camps of more contemporary conflicts. Using official documentation as its basis, this paper sketches the conceptualization of the Umbilo Camp, its location and construction, camp life, and repatriation from the Camp, which was completed in February 1903.
