Abstract: | The mere mention of the name of Bhambatha kaMancinza, chief of the Zondi people, and resident of the Umvoti district in Natal, conjures up memories of rebellion against the collection of the poll tax and other forms of colonial rule in South Africa. This paper examines Bhambatha's role, experiences and actions in the 1899-1902 Anglo-Boer War. It concludes that Bhambatha's offhand treatment by the Natal government during the Anglo-Boer War, his loyalty notwithstanding, was a contributory factor to his insurrectionary mindset in the postwar years, which led to his rebellion in 1906.
