Abstract: | In so-called peripheral regions, migration and mobility decisions have become part and parcel of social and economic life. This chapter deals with the relationship between mobility, resources and society in the Sahel. The dynamics in rural areas of the Sahel, that are often explained in relation to the availability of ecological and economic resources, is placed in a broader perspective. In the mobile spaces in which people from these areas work and live, resources become part of a discourse about contested claims and are an expression of new social and cultural realities. The chapter first explores the concept of mobility and the social transformations it entails. The dynamics of rural mobility are then illustrated with examples from the author's field research among the Fulbe in Mali and in refugee camps in eastern Chad. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
