Abstract:Based on research carried out in 2002 and 2003 in the rural municipality of Dialokoto (c. 70 km south of Tambacounda, Senegal), this paper examines the interrelationship between nature conservation policies and rural development policies in the area around the national park Niokolo Koba. It presents a comparative analysis of, on the one hand, the governmental organizations for nature protection and those for rural development and income generation active in the area and, on the other, private projects for nature conservation and for rural income generation. The paper concludes that both the governmental and private organizations for nature conservation do recognize the double aim of nature conservation and rural development, but that most private projects for rural development have not formulated any intentions to nature conservation; that governmental organizations have to cope with lack of means and personnel, whereas private projects are relatively rich; and that the much-needed forum for coordination and negotiation does not function because many private organizations are behaving in an independent and arrogant way. In sum, the desired synergy at the local level does not work. Bibliogr., notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract]
