Abstract:Since the early 1960s, when the first institution for theatre training in Nigeria was established at the University of Ibadan, the Nigerian university system has witnessed the establishment of various Departments of Theatre Arts, Performing Arts, and Creative Arts. Prominent among these are the Departments of Theatre Arts at the Universities of Calabar, Nsukka, Maiduguri and Abuja, the Departments of Creative Arts at the Universities of Port Harcourt and Lagos, and the Department of Performing Arts at the University of Ilorin. This paper briefly surveys the history of theatre training and theatre practice in Nigeria before focusing on an assessment of selected theatre design and technology courses at the Universities of Ibadan and Lagos. It pays attention to teaching approaches and computer-aided design programmes, and concludes that students are ill-equipped in the use of digital technology. Bibliogr., sum. [ASC Leiden abstract]
