Abstract: | Often labelled 'rituals', male circumcision and female excision are also irreversible amputations of human genitalia. Scholars and activists alike have been diffident about making a case for symmetry between these two practices. This issue of 'Matatu' consists, in the main, of the proceedings of the colloquium held at the Fondation Universitaire in Brussels, Belgium, on 18 December 2004, entitled: '(A)symétries sexuelles: autour de la circoncision et de l'excision' / (Dis)symmetry embodied: around male and female 'circumcision''. It investigates the sociological, medical, legal and religious justifications for male circumcision and female excision while pointing to various symmetries and asymmetries in their discursive representation in cultural anthropology, law, medicine and literature. The volume also includes autobiographical, first-person accounts and interviews. Contributors: Sami A. Aldeeb Abu-Sahlieh, Dominique Arnaud, Jerry K.
