Abstract: | The (Jewish) Margolis family originated in Lithuania. Of the nine children born between 1875 and 1898, three brothers ended up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe): Harry, Salman and Berel. This paper is concerned with Harry and Salman and their descendants, and their establishment of Olivine Industries, a family partnership started in 1931. In the initial stage, the company only processed groundnuts for the family's oil factory and used tallow in the soap business. A candle factory was added in the 1950s and the business expanded in line with the development of Rhodesia, later processing cottonseed oil for margarine and bakers' fats. In the 1980s Olivine became a joint venture with H.J. Heinz, and now manufactures H.J. Heinz products, canned fruits, jams, etc. as well as the original foundation business of oils, soaps, margarine and candles. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
