Abstract: | United Nations peacekeeping operations go back to Dag Hammarskjöld's initiatives as the second Secretary-General in the mid-1950s. More recently, they have taken on hitherto unprecedented dimensions. By far the largest proportional engagement is currently to be found on the African continent. Of late, the African Union has initiated its own security architecture to complement the UN's efforts and assume collective responsibility for African security affairs. The contributions by Kwesi Aning, Linnea Bergholm, and Andreas Mehler explore the experiences and scope of UN peacekeeping initiatives in Africa and the emerging collaboration with the AU.
