Abstract:This article reflects on the collaboration between 1973 and 1979 of Hermann Giliomee and Richard Elphick, as well as that between the two of them and other scholars, a process which resulted in the publication of their co-edited study 'The shaping of South African society, 1652-1820'. It also dwells on reactions to the book, and its revised edition of 1989, which were prescribed texts in many South African universities for over a decade. Bibliogr., ref., sum. [Journal abstract]
