Abstract: | This book is part of a project initiated in 2004 by the Catholic University of Angola and the University of Coimbra, Portugal. The focus of the project is on democratization and development in Angola in the southern African context. The papers in this volume were earlier presented at a conference held at the European Parliament in Brussels on 17 November 2009. Following an introduction by Patrick Chabal, the chapters are arranged in three parts: 1. Angola: public space and international interests (contributions by Nuno Vidal; David Sogge, Bob van der Winden and René Roersma; Maliana Marcelino Serrano; and Kristin Reed); 2. Angola: politics, civil society organisations and Churches (contributions by Justino Pinto de Andrade, Fernando Macedo, Fernando Pacheco, Sérgio Calundungo, Carlos Figueiredo, Benjamin A. Castello, and Michael Comerford); 3. Southern African context: South Africa (Dale McKinley), Namibia (Henning Melber), Mozambique (Manuel de Araújo & Raúl Chambote), Democratic Republic of Congo (Leo Zeilig), and Zimbabwe (Elinor Sisulu, Pascal Richard & Steve Kibble).
