Abstract: | Recently, two African countries, Kenya (2007) and Zimbabwe (2008), conducted general elections to mark the democratic change of leadership. In both countries, people exercised their right to vote, but in the process, they experienced many hindrances. Voting in these elections proved to be an insufficient measure of democray. This article analyses the Kenyan and Zimbabwean elections in the context of the democratic principles relevant to election processes. In particular, it focuses on the role of the election management bodies or electoral commissions. The article also discusses the link between what is happening in the African democracy arena and the development of the international law of democracy. It concludes that there is much to be done and emphasizes the role of the African Union, African leaders and regional organizations in promoting democracy. Notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
