Abstract: | This paper discusses the role of human rights in addressing the issue of HIV/AIDS. It argues that due to a tight relationship between HIV/AIDS and human rights, such as the right to good health, access to medication, the right against discrimination, and the right to information, efforts to implement human rights can control new infections of HIV. Focusing on Tanzania, the paper shows that there is some improvement in the country's efforts to scale down the rate of HIV infections. Tanzania has adopted legislation which incorporates human rights norms, the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2008 Act no. 28. Current programmes to address the pandemic cover four areas, namely prevention, care, treatment and general support to people with HIV/AIDS. Notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
