Abstract: | The first half of this double issue of 'Ufahamu' focuses on the relationship between soccer, nationalism, politics and development in Africa. Todd Cleveland writes about the rise of nationalism in Luanda as Angola celebrated its first World Cup finals in 2006. Steve Sortijas explores the relationship between sports and politics by analysing the development of a new national stadium in Tanzania. Sarah Forde and Andrea Kendall-Taylor examine sport and development through the work done by a Kenyan organization on the effects of playing soccer on young women in Kilifi. Emma Nesper reflects on the symbolic place of soccer at a university in Senegal and suggests that soccer serves as an alternative venue for productive discussion when the university, in its official capacity, fails to provide such space.
