Abstract: | The role of informal social security in the wider context of social security in South Africa is examined from the point of view of the purpose of social security in general, the characteristics of informal social security, the role of informal social security in fulfilling the wider aim of social security, the legal rights and obligations involved in informal security situations and the weaknesses associated with the system of informal social security. Informal social security in South Africa must be considered a serious phenomenon in terms of its role and importance in the wider context of general social security. It should be recognized as a tool for social upliftment and as a compensatory mechanism for the economic imbalances brought about by the gap between the poor and the rich in South African society.
