Abstract:This paper examines the role of political communication in indigenous Liberian polities before and after the founding of the Liberian State. It deciphers the role of political communication in the formation of the State in Liberia following the arrival of free African Americans and freed slaves from the United States from the 1820s onward, and the ways in which the ruling Liberian elites used political communication as an instrument of control. Finally it examines the role political communication could play in building a democratic Liberian society. Bibliogr., sum. [ASC Leiden abstract]
