Abstract: | Updated regional assessments of the impact of climate change, vulnerability and adaptation are required to put Botswana in perspective with respect to the ability to anticipate, prepare and respond to climate change related events in the future. The present review first provides background information on southern Africa and Botswana in particular. This is followed by highlights on developments in climate change science to date and the implications of green house gas emissions for the climate and as a result for the supply of natural resources. The review then explores likely impacts of climate change and adaptation strategies in key sectors: water, agriculture, fisheries, natural systems, health and transport. A detailed assessment per sector indicates links between adaptation options and sustainable development as well as gaps in the available information. The last two subsections focus on research needs and implications of adaptation on a broader scale. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
