Abstract:There are many factors (e.g. cultural, socioeconomical, linguistic and the nature of the learning content itself) that affect teaching and learning. This type of knowledge - often referred to as 'prior knowledge' - has been found to underpin the quality of learning in a significant way, by either facilitating or inhibiting learning. This article illustrates how physics teachers/lecturers can draw on indigenous African knowledge as they teach concepts and introduce terminology and nomenclature in the physics curriculum.
