| Abstract: | The University of Botswana provided a unique forum in the country for debates on the liberation struggle in southern Africa. It was one of the few places where open support of the struggle was possible. As the only University in the country, the University of Botswana played host to several students and academics who had fled the brutal regimes of South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, Rhodesia and Namibia. The author traces the role of the University College of Botswana campus community in the liberation struggle for southern Africa from the early years of the University in the mid-1960s to the year of Zimbabwe's independence in 1980. He discusses three student demonstrations that took place between 1975 and 1980 and analyses how the demonstrations related to the struggle. He also considers the roles played by some lecturers at the University and the views of the government of Botswana towards the University. The three case studies show that the University community in Botswana was clearly part of the regional liberation movement and this was consistent with developments elsewhere in the continent and beyond.
