Abstract: | The Volta Basin Research Project (VBRP) was established 45 years ago to examine the socioeconomic consequences of the construction of the Akosombo hydroelectric dam with the aim of improving the livelihoods of the inhabitants of the basin. Today the VBRP faces new challenges far beyond its initial limited mandate. These are associated with drastic demographic changes, a population growth which has not been matched with infrastructural development, diminished livelihood opportunities, and the growing occurrence of HIV/AIDS. This volume contains the proceedings of a seminar held on 20 March 2007 at which the results were presented of research conducted between 2004 and 2007 on health developments, agricultural resources and socioeconomic activities in the Volta Basin. Issues dealt with include schistosomiasis, notably female genital schistosomiasis, sources and quality of drinking water, composting and the use of compost for improved soil fertility and crop productivity, lagoon land crab fishery, aquaculture of the Volta clam and the pink shrimp, housing conditions and related environmental characteristics of households, and competition for resources between migrants and the indigenous population.
