Abstract: | The Public Records Office in London holds two documents written by Lt. Col. Charles Walter Barton DSO of the King's African Rifles (KAR) which show the difficulties Barton had to contend with both when he created a new King's African Rifles battalion in Nyasaland (now Malawi) in 1917 and when he commanded the new battalion during its first engagements with the Germans in Portuguese East Africa in the first half of 1918. This paper describes these military actions in detail. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
