Abstract: | Co-management is sometimes also referred to as participatory, collaborative or joint management. There are many definitions, but in general it is regarded as a middle-range management option between State and community management. This paper presents an overview of the definition, global trends, legal framework in South Africa and process of co-management in protected areas, as well as an explanation of the various types of co-management that were identified. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are listed, and a beneficiation matrix is developed as a tool to facilitate choosing the optimal option for each given situation. Bibliogr., sum.
