Abstract:The state of feminisms today, as illustrated in this special issue, is caught in a political tide pulling against feminist gains of the 1990s. Challenging the 'menstreaming' of gender politics in South Africa, many of the authors in this issue lament the loss of feminist mobilization, calling for action and renewed attention to gender hierarchies and unequal power. In the introduction, Deevia Bhana and Shirley Mthethwa-Sommers argue that despite the grim state of feminisms today, hope can be measured in the small-scale mobilization of organizations such as Sonke Gender Justice working to bring men into feminist thinking and challenging the male hegemonic politics. The articles in the issue focus on such challenges and change as they weave through feminist theory, sexualities, climate change, education and religion and open further questions for the future of feminist politics. Contributions by Amanda Gouws, Maheshvari Naidu, Wendy Annecke, Yvette Abrahams and Nthabiseng Mohlakoana, Cheryl Potgieter and Sarojini Nadar, Rizwana Habib Latha (on Senegal), Bronwynne Anderson, Pholoho Morojele (on Lesotho), Shakila Reddy, Antje Schuhmann, Frances Nomvuyo Nkani and Deevia Bhana, and Nadia Sanger.
