Abstract: | Bata Zimbabwe, one of the leading companies in Zimbabwe, was established in 1939, but the original firm traces its history from 19th-century Moravia, one of the historical lands of today's Czech Republic. This paper examines the history of the Rhodesian Bata Shoe Company, detailing information about managers and personnel, shoe production, machinery, developments during World War II and rises and recesses during the post-war years. The 1970s were difficult due to political unrest and military activity, but the 1980s and 1990s saw the opening of new factories in Mutare and Kwekwe, the building of a permanent pavillion at the Bulawayo Trade Fair grounds, and steady increases in the number of shops all over Zimbabwe.
