Abstract:This paper examines the history of the Church Missionary Society (CMS), later known as the Anglican Church in Badagry (Nigeria), between 1842 and 2005, when the inauguration of the Missionary Diocese of Badagry took place. The paper looks at the geographical location of Badagry; the traditional religious beliefs of the - Yoruba - people of Badagry; the introduction of Christianity to Badagry, including the history of St. Thomas Church; the socioeconomic impact of Christianity in Badagry; and challenges the Christian missionaries had to contend with. The paper concludes, amongst others, by advocating a native pastorate for the Diocese, aggressive evangelism, and the provision of infrastructural facilities for the people. Ref. [ASC Leiden abstract]
