Abstract: | Relying heavily on his personal experiences, the author discusses dilemmas a fieldworker faces when conducting research in a violence-prone environment (in this case, oral literature research in Kenya), and the ethical considerations thereof. Issues addressed include the pull of negative ethnicity; linking research to advocacy for peaceful coexistence; clandestine research; and spying for the government in order to stop violence. The author argues that a number of folklore researchers operate in an ethical void and are unprepared to address various ethical dilemmas that they encounter before, during and after fieldwork. He argues that oral literature scholars should formulate a code of ethics to guide fieldworkers in order to uphold high levels of professionalism. Bibliogr., note, sum. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
