Abstract:This collective volume examines culturally constructed views of the environmental history of the Middle East and North Africa and suggests that these views have often benefited elites at the expense of the ecologies and the peoples of the region. The contributors consider the social, political, technological, economic and ecological implications of environmental imaginaries of the region over the longue durée as well as in more recent, postcolonial settings. Together, they cover the last three centuries in an area which includes the present-day countries of Egypt, Iraq, Israel, the Maghreb, Palestine and Turkey. Contributions on Africa: Restoring roman nature: French identity and North African environmental history (Diana K. Davis); Body of work: water and reimagining the Sahara in the era of decolonization (George R. Trumbull IV, on colonial Algeria); From the boytom up: the Nile, silt, and humans in Ottoman Egypt (Alan Mikhail); Drafting a map of colonial Egypt: the 1902 Aswan dam, historical imagination, and the production of agricultural geography (Jennifer L. Derr); Remapping the nation, critiquing the State: environmental narratives and desert land reclamation in Egypt (Jeannie Sowers). [ASC Leiden abstract]
