| Abstract: | Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Ghana have used various strategies, including the donation of teaching and learning materials, construction of classroom blocks, and the training of teachers to support primary education in northern Ghana. One of the strategies used by the Catholic Relief Service (CRS), an international NGO active in the education sector in northern Ghana, is the Food-for-Education Programme. This programme provides hot lunch for pupils in rural communities as well as 'take home ration' for girls in upper primary classes to encourage regular attendance at school. This paper is based on empirical analysis of the dynamics of the Food-for-Education Programme in the West Mamprusi district of northern Ghana. The data were collected in 2006-2008 through interviews, case studies, and observations of the activities of the various stakeholders in the education sector, as well as an analysis of the reports provided by the CRS. The research found, among others, that the Food-for-Education Programme promotes attendance at school where it operates, and in areas where the CRS had terminated the programme, attendance at school dropped significantly. The study also underlines the significant contributions of the community, parents, pupils and teachers not only to the success of the programme but to its sustainability. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
