Abstract: | Since the beginning of the 1990s there has been a demand for 'Sharia' in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. This book contains 8 essays presented at an international conference on comparative aspects on Sharia in Nigeria hosted by the University of Jos in conjunction with Universität Bayreuth in January 2004. The essays include: The demand for 'Shariah' in African democratization processes: pitfalls or opportunities? (Abdulkader Tayob); Rethinking the role of religion in the public sphere: local and global perspectives (Rosalind I.J. Hackett); The enforcement of God's law: the Sharia in the present world of Islam (Ruud Peters); Freedom of religion and its limitations: judicial standards for deciding particular cases (amongst others the practice of 'Santeria', a fusion of Roman Catholic and Yoruban practices and beliefs begun among African slaves in Cuba, in the US) (John C. Reitz); The west and the rest: reflections on the intercultural dialogue about Shariah (Sanusi Lamido Sanusi); Religion: source of conflict or resource for peace? (Gerrie ter Haar); and The future of Shariah (Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im). [ASC Leiden abstract] |
