Abstract: | Between the late 19th and mid-20th century the social divisions in Liberian society were obvious. Americo-Liberians never constituted more than 10 percent of the population. Yet, they dominated political and economic life of the Republic of Liberia by disenfranchising and relegating the indigenous majority to the status of second-class citizens. Still, in spite of the social stratification that existed, there was considerable cross-cultural interaction between Americo-Liberians and indigenous people, for instance in terms of sexuality. The present account of sexual unions (including marriage, concubinage and polygyny) between Americo-Liberians and indigenous people presents some observations about these cross-cultural sexual relationships.
