Abstract: | This article explores the psychosocial challenges and bottlenecks faced by the primary caregivers of Kanye Community Home Based Care (CHBC) programme (Botswana). The study was descriptive and explorative in nature and qualitative in design. It was conducted in December 2005 and January 2006 and involved 82 registered primary caregivers in ten focus group discussions. All five CHBC nurses in the programme were engaged in one-to-one interviews. Participant observation was also used. The study found many aspects of psychosocial support in disarray: inadequate support from friends, family members and relatives; inadequate nutritional support; inadequate care package; inadequate counselling; inadequate supervision; lack of caregiver support groups and unsatisfactory services of social workers. It is recommended that the programme put in place a conducive atmosphere to improve all the psychosocial challenges indicated. Bibliogr., sum. [Journal abstract] |
