Abstract:Research on criminal offenders, in this case persons convicted of sexual offences, involves both methodological and ethical challenges. These include choosing the study site, designing research tools, sampling, data collection, interviewing inmates and presenting the research findings. Drawing on his investigation of factors predisposing men to commit acts of rape in Kenya, based on a study sample drawn from three maximum security prisons, Kamiti (Nairobi), Naivahsa and Nyeri, the author explores these challenges and provides insights into conducting prison research in Kenya. He argues that researchers' flexibility in the field and the way they respond to and handle challenges faced along the way will, in essence, dictate their success or failure in acquiring relevant data.
