Abstract: | This documentary tells the story of an unlikely revolutionary. Born into a middle class Muslim Indian family in South Africa, young Ahmed Kathrada sides with the oppressed black majority in the 1950s. Arrested and convicted for high treason on June 12, 1964, during the Rivonia process, Ahmed Kathrada is sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island, together with Nelson Mandela and six others. On the island, 'Kathy' and 'Madiba' become more than just friends, they become family. But where does that leave his blood relatives? For 26 years Kathrada wrote letters to his niece Zohra, who acted as his eyes and ears during his time in prison. The film tells the life of Ahmed Kathrada through interviews with Kathrada himself, Zohra and other members of his family. [Abstract reproduced from dvd-video] |
