Abstract: | In their analysis of Hausa popular literature by the Raina Kama writers' group in Kano (northern Nigeria) in the late 1980s, the authors emphasize the cultural complexity of Hausa popular literature and reflect on the dynamism of popular authorship in Africa. Detailed interviews with members of Raina Kama reveal that their writing arose out of hardship, economic insecurity, and a sense of exclusion from 'elite' society. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
