Abstract: | This article provides an analysis of the rhetorical function of irony in political cartoons pertaining to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. A sample of cartoons by the South African cartoonist Zapiro is collected and analysed in terms of Partington's (2007) model for irony in news media. Partington (2007) approaches irony as a method to express criticism. Specific attention is paid to the target readership of each cartoon, especially with regard to the distribution of foreign and domestic targets, and the most common themes communicated on the basis of irony are identified. The results suggest that against the backdrop of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, irony was considered useful for enhancing specific themes. Bibliogr., ref., sum. [Journal abstract] |
