Abstract:	The aim of this special issue of 'Journal of African cinemas' is to celebrate and commemorate women directors from francophone Africa by offering an overview of African cinemas from a gender perspective. This as a celebration of 40 years of female film-making in francophone Africa. Contributions cover various countries and generations.
