Abstract: | The articles in this special volume of the 'Journal for Islamic Studies' concentrate on three central themes: reform (tajdid), religious leaders and education. With a particular focus on reform, the articles show the significance and impact of these themes in African contexts. The articles emerged from a conference on 'Islamic reform and public life in Africa', organized at the University of Cape Town in 2011. Contributions: What is 'reform'?
