Abstract: | This book analyses the state and management of national parks in Africa. It discusses the ecosystems of the African national parks and assesses the capacity of environmental leadership and management to positively impact on biodiversity conservation. It also examines the economic, social, and environmental performance of national parks in Africa, and identifies a number of key challenges facing the sustainability of national parks. The books contains 23 chapters, organized in three parts. The introduction and key issues are presented in Part I; Part 2 concentrates on subregional cases studies (Cameroon, Ghana, East Africa, southern Africa, Botswana), while Part III discusses two case studies from Brazil and Vietnam. The chapters emanate from papers presented at a conference on the management of national parks and biodiversity conservation at the University of Ghana in April 2007. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
