Abstract:This paper examines the stylistic features of the Arabic writings of Yoruba 'Ulama' in Nigeria. The texts under study, prose as well as poetry, were randomly sampled from volumes of the Ulama's Arabic works. The author investigates the extent to which the texts conform to classical norms on the one hand, and modern styles of Arabic writing on the other hand. He examines the texts on the use of the opening 'Nasib' and closing formulae, language and diction, grammar, the application of rhetorical devices, and compliance with metrical rules. Notes, ref., sum. [ASC Leiden abstract]
