Abstract:This publication analyses how the people of the Dwars River Valley in South Africa's Western Cape province have responded to changing land use since 1994 and how that relates to the historical and spatial contexts of the valley. In particular, it examines the unintended consequences of real estate development in an area of agricultural production around Boschendal. It shows the creative tactics poor people use to survive - whether it is by turning to Pentecostalism, patrolling respectability by neighbourhood watches, or negotiating the contradictory gendered norms that frame respectability and entrepreneurship. By exploring the Solms-Delta farm as a case study, the book also looks at how initiatives can open up real possibilities for empowerment.
