Abstract: | Historical arguments play a significant role in the Ethio-Eritrean conflict. Both sides bear on history in order to confirm their opposing political goals, Eritrean independence versus the Ethiopian idea of unity. Discussing existing historical sources on the area, the present article demonstrates the relevance of historical authentication for the conflicting sides as well as their consistent misuse of historical facts. It is argued that it is high time for removing historical arguments from the heated debates in the political sphere, and situating them again in the realms of historiography proper.
