Abstract:If resources are managed well, there is potential to reduce poverty. However, harnessing natural resources for sustained development is both technically and politically difficult. The papers in this book, presented at a Senior Policy Seminar organized by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) in Maputo (Mozambique) in 2011, are mainly on experiences and lessons learnt in this field. Contributions: Role of the state in natural resources exploration and exploitation (Paul Collier); Policy issues in resource rent extraction - hydrocarbons (Akpan Ekpo); Policy issues in resource rent extraction - hard commodities (Anthony M. Simpasa); Meeting the challenges of economic diversification in resource-rich countries (John Page); Managing savings/investment deccisions in resource-rich countries including sovereign wealth fund and related issues (Ibrahim Elbadawi & Boaz Nandwa).
