Abstract: | This historical feature film (1939), shot partly in Congo and Gabon, tells the story of the exploration of what later became French Equatorial Africa (Afrique équatoriale française, AEF). It is the story of a - literally - barefoot idealist, French by choice rather that by birth, set on spreading the republican gospel of civilization, of abolishing slavery, confronting a world of ruffians: Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, born in 1852 in Italy. The DVD is supplemented with an interview with Eric Deroo, a specialist on colonial history, and with an analysis by Alain Onkani and Dhavy Gantsou of the Batéké ethnic group.
