Abstract: | How are Western media portraying China-Africa relations, and what consequences does this have on Chinese media reactions and portrayals of China-Africa relations? This article analyses The Economist's rhetoric and China Daily Africa Weekly's political cartoons in order to ascertain the political representation of China-Africa relations in each of these outlets. The findings show that although there are major differences between the two sources in terms of the rhetoric used, in the metaphors, as well as cartoons used for illustrations, there is nonetheless an important similarity in the paternalistic tone present in both types of reporting. That is to say, there is a lack of African agency in the narratives displayed in these articles and cartoons analysed. The article closes by presenting some reflections and suggestions as to what can be done to improve Chinese media's reporting on China-Africa relations. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
