Abstract: | This study analyses the risk-taking propensity of male and female entrepreneurs in Roodepoort (South Africa). Primary data were collected from a sample of 400 randomly selected small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs, and two structured questionnaires were used. The study found that many of the participants indicated similar risk-taking profiles. No significant differences in the mean scores between males and females in the financial and social domains of risk-taking perceptions were found. There was, however, a significant difference with regard to risk-taking perceptions in the ethical domain, health and safety issues, and recreational matters. There was also a difference in business performance perceptions. The study suggests that there is no correlation between actual business performance and risk-taking in entrepreneurs: risk-taking in different genders cannot serve as an indicator of success.
