Abstract:Tourism is important to the economy of coastal towns in Namibai, but lack of regulation in the marine tourism sector has the potential to have negative long-term impacts. For this study, data on marine wildlife-watching tourism in Walvis Bay (Namibia) were collected via interviews. 11 companies offered tours in 2010, providing the equivalent of at least 80 full-time, year-round jobs and direct revenue of over 30 million Namibian dollars. A voluntary code of conduct has been in place for several years but is not adhered to. Cetaceans (a diverse array of species of whales and dolphins) are frequently exposed to close approaches by vessels, raising concerns for the sustainability of the industry. App., bibliogr., notes, sum. in English and German. [Journal abstract]
