| Abstract: | In this article the author explains the concept of 'citizenship communication', a new direction in the field of development communication, a set of strategies of information diffusion for development and social change. He argues that the shift to 'citizenship communication' could bring a new era of empowerment through communication rights which could form an antidote to the depoliticisation of the individual, who is increasingly being reduced to a consumer citizen. According to the author, Journalism Studies in Africa should take heed of this new direction, which could also provide fruitful collaboration between scholars in the Global South. Bibliogr.
