Abstract:In this article the author argues that media research can assist in intensifying an effective response to real-world problems and can help change the material conditions of people's lives, but that it will require increased emphasis on policy determinants at both the national and the global levels, as well as media systems research and a more thorough interrogation of the conditions under which research evidence influences policy change. She supports this view by means of a case study of South Africa. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract]
